If foilists are about to try épée for the first time, it is unlikely that you would start by teaching them octave. At this point they will not be used to the heavier weapon; the sword hand will tend to drop in octave, losing control of the blade and leaving them vulnerable to a low-high attack. They can, however, be taught a stop-hit threat to foot, or to slow an opponent down by feinting to the mask.

The hit at épée is quite distinctive and must be done in a particular way in order to develop accuracy.
